Aquamarine

Clear light blue to blue-green, Aquamarine is a stone of courage and serenity. This lovely and gentle gem evokes the sea in both its name and its color. The ancients saw this as a stone of courage and felt that carrying it would help them return safe and prosperous from all sea voyages.

Black Tourmaline

Gemological Properties
Aquamarine belongs to the ‘Beryl’ family of minerals.  Its chemical composition is Be3Al2(SiO3)6; a beryllium, aluminum, silicate that crystallizes as six sided prisms in the hexagonal crystal system.  Aquamarine is usually transparent, but can also be translucent or opaque.  Aquamarine means ‘sea water’ in Latin.  The hardness of Aquamarine is 7.5 on the Moh’s scale and the density lies between the range of 2.68-2.71.  Its luster is vitreous and the typical color range is a clear sky blue to a beautiful bluish-green.  Aquamarine occurs all over the world; from South America, Russia, Madagascar, and the USA.

Tourmaline is its own mineral species and belongs to the hexagonal crystal system.  The chemical composition is Na(Mg,Fe)3Al6(OH)4(BO3)3(Si6O18).  Tourmaline occurs in many colors; black, red, brown, pink, watermelon, red, bi-color, green, and blue.  Cats eye stones are also available. The refractive index is 1.61-1.65 and the specific gravity is 3.00.  The hardness is 7.5.
