When it comes to quartz crystals, Herkimer Diamonds are unquestionably in a class by themselves. There is something majestic about these double-terminated clear quartz hexagons. The way they refract light is so unusual that it looks like a blend of lasers and pure water.
More brilliant and energetically superior to clear quartz crystal, Herkimer Diamond crystals are very rare. History
For thousands of years, these gems have been sought and valued for their beauty and energy. The Mohawk Indians native to the area were known as the people of Kanyenke. They were known to themselves and to the other Iroquois nations as the Kanyenkehaka,”The People of the Crystals”.
Kanyenke has usually been translated “Place of the Flint,” but the flint (or more properly chert) sources in Mohawk country were almost non-existent. More important to the Iroquois were the clear quartz crystals now called Herkimer Diamonds.
These crystals, which could be quarried in a few local mines, abound on Mohawk village sites. Herkimer Diamonds were highly valued by the Iroquois and other Indian nations and Kanyenke was more likely the “Place of the Crystals” when translated.
Crystals were symbolically and spiritually important as amulets of power, protection, success, health, and long life, artifacts more likely to inspire a name than flint or chert. The Mohawks were the main suppliers of these special quartz crystals, “Herkimer Diamonds”, up to 1614.
As early as the 1700′s, settlers have been mining Herkimer Diamonds because of the gem stone’s diamond-like clarity, natural facets, and double termination. The original miners thought they had found diamonds due to the high refractive index of Herkimer Quartz.
Geology
The Herkimer Diamond Quartz comes from only one place – Herkimer, New York, in the United States. They are found in the Dolomite bedrock in cavities, cracks and fissures, having formed there millions of years ago.
“Herkimer Diamonds” is the name given to the quartz crystals found there.
Quartz crystals have a hexagonal formation, however, most “Herkimer” quartz are double terminated. It is theorized that the crystals grew with little or no contact with the surrounding dolomite in a liquid environment.
