Lavender / Yttrium – bridge to the Divine.
Yttrium Fluorite is an unusual, rare and beautiful form of lavender Fluorite from Mexico. It is unusual in the fact that it does not cleave as other varieties of Fluorite and is extremely dense.

Fluorite is known for being a mental body stone, but Yttrium is very different in the fact that it is attached to the physical world. While this may seem an unusual property for a mentally orientated mineral, it does serve an important function.

Many people are too mentally oriented, they are thinkers, philosophers and dreamers who lack the discipline or grounded-ness to bring their ideas into reality. Yttrium Fluorite assists in grounding the ideas of these thinkers by manifesting those plans–making things happen.

Another way the energies of this stone maybe utilized is by bringing down mental concepts to a level more readily understood by the average person. Minerals such as Selenite give us access into higher wisdom, Calcite can bridge the gap between that reality and our own, but a mineral such as Yttrium Fluorite will bring that information down through the physical plane to a level more easily understood.

Cube and Octahedron – The Sacred Geometrical Structure of Fluorite

Geometry translates as “measure of the earth”. Sacred geometry is an exploration of certain special relationships, or ratios, which are fundamental to the unfolding and enfolding of matter in space and time. These magical proportions are present in all manifest life, on micro, human and macro-cosmic scales.

The Platonic Solids are five very special forms (many-sided or polyhedron) distinguished from all others by their perfection of internal balance and harmony. To contemplate these forms attunes the mind to the plane of eternal harmony known as “the music of the spheres” which is present behind the tumultuous surface of Maya we experience as the everyday world. Connecting with the energy of this plane strengthens the balancing force in planetary / universal consciousness.

Fluorite in the cube formation is very good for grounding and manifesting in the four directions (the physical plane). It aids in clarifying one’s purpose. The Cube is associated with the element of Earth and corresponds to the Root Chakra. The Cube sits flat, firmly rooted to its spot. Meditating on this shape will assist in grounding your energy, regaining focus, removing tensions and easing physical stresses. It will reconnect your energies to that of the Earth and Nature.

Octahedral Fluorite is used to help us dissolve mental blocks, narrow mindedness, and thought constricting patterns. The Octahedron represents the element of Air and is linked to the Heart Chakra, which is the center for love and compassion. This center includes the healing and nurturing aspects within, which allow that sacred, safe space in which to find acceptance and forgiveness. The self-reflecting shape of the Octahedron moves into a higher vibration of reflection, compassion and healing. Through working with the Octahedron, we attune to the more spiritual nature of self and in effect begin to understand our true nature.

The name fluorite comes from the Latin words fluo or fluere, meaning “to flow,” because fluorite melts easily and is used as flux in the manufacture and refining of steel, aluminum, and lead. Formerly called fluorspar, usually translucent fluorite comes in shades of white, brown, blue, yellow, purple, red, colorless, and green.

Chemically, it is calcium fluoride, CaF2. Its crystals, commonly cubic, are transparent or translucent and under certain conditions exhibit fluorescence. The mineral also occurs in granular and massive forms.

Fluorite is found in various parts of the world, especially in England, Germany, Mexico, and in Kentucky and Illinois in the United States. Its chief use is as a flux in metallurgy, but it is also employed in the preparation of hydrofluoric acid, fluoride in water and toothpaste, fluorine gas, and in the manufacture of opal glass and enamel. Some of its colorless crystals are used for making lenses and prisms.

The word fluorescent was derived from fluorite since specimens of fluorite were some of the first fluorescent examples ever studied. Fluorite is so strongly fluorescent that it is the root of the word “fluoresce.” The naming followed the naming precedence set by opalescence from opal; ergo fluorescence from fluorite.
Typically it fluoresces blue but other fluorescent colors include yellow, green, red, white and purple. Some specimens have the added effect of simultaneously having a different color under longwave UV light from its color under shortwave UV light.

Fluorite has several different crystal habits (shapes) that always produce well formed, good, clean crystals. The cube is by far the most recognized habit of fluorite followed by the octahedron which is believed to form at higher temperatures than the cube.

A rarer habit variety is the twelve sided dodecahedron however it is never seen by itself and usually modifies the cubic crystals by replacing the edges of the cube with one flat face of a dodecahedron.

The tetrahexahedron is a twenty four sided habit that is also seen modifying the cubic habit. But instead of one face replacing each cubic edge, two faces modify the cube’s edges.

Occasionally combinations of a cube, dodecahedron and tetrahexahedron are seen producing an overall cubic crystal with no less that three minor parallel faces replacing each cubic edge.

A fifth form is the hexoctahedron which modifies the cube by placing six very minor faces at each corner of the cube.

Twinning is also common in fluorite and symmetrical penetration twins, especially from Cumberland England are much sought after by collectors.

Fluorite’s crystalline Hexoctahedral structure
Within the isometric system, the Hexoctahedral Fluorite is one of the most symmetrical structures possible in three dimensional space. The word, isometric, means “same measure”, an allusion to the equal three dimensional structure.

“Cubic System” is a synonym for the isometric system and is due to the cubic nature of the crystallographic structure as well as the most common isometric form, the cube. The most symmetrical class of all is the Hexoctahedral Class.

The three identical crystallographic axes serve as four fold rotational axes with a square outline when viewed down each axis. However the principle and defining axes for the isometric system are the 4 three fold axes. They dissect the three crystallographic axes and are essentially the 4 diagonal lines through a cube.

If you picture a transparent cube, then draw lines from each corner, through the middle to the other corner, then you will end up with 4 lines that represent the 4 three fold axes. The three fold rotational axes can be see on a cube as the axes through the three top faces and the three bottom faces, when the cube is held from corner to opposite corner.

The octahedron shows the three fold rotations better than the cube with its triangular faces that are perpendicular to the three fold axes. The four fold rotations though are not as easy to see on the octahedron, but a square cross-section can be seen when viewed down the points of the octahedron. The other forms of the hexoctahedral class all demonstrate these symmetry elements including the 6 two fold axes and 9 mirror planes.

Fluorites use goes back thousands of years. It has been carved into figurines, Gods and Goddesses, guides, totems and animals as well as bowls, cups, dishes and vases.  It’s beauty as well as the properties ascribed to it made Fluorite a natural choice in jewelry and amulets. Due to its Mohs hardness of 4, only a few pieces have survived from antiquity.

What we do know is that Fluorite has been highly prized and valued by the Egyptians, Romans, Celts, Britons, French, Germans, Chinese,  American Indians and others.  Where ever it was mined,  Fluorite commanded its weight in gold.

The ancient Egyptians used fluorite in statues of the Gods and in carving scarabs. The Chinese have used it in carvings from ancient times.  A fluorite carving from the Mississippi Mound builders era, dating between 900 and 1650 A.D.,  was discovered by archaeologists in a burial pit in Illinois near the Ohio River.

There are many mentions of fluorite in ancient Roman texts. Pliny the Elder, the ancient Roman naturalist of Greek origin wrote of fluorite in 77 A.D. in his encyclopedia of natural history. Pliny describes fluorite as one of the world’s most precious gemstones, and describes its healing and magical properties. In the ancient world many believed that fluorite was crystallized light, and as such, could bring light into the brain (enlightenment).

Among the many gem-related facts that modern gemology has been able to learn from Pliny the Elder is the record of young Roman Emperor Nero’s $240,000 (in modern figures) purchase of a fine fluorite sometime in the first century A.D.

Ancient Roman sources also relate other mentions of fluorite, including a valuable vase taken by the Roman Emperor Augustus from the Pharaoh’s palace in Alexandria, Egypt. Roman sources also include an earlier incident where Julius Caesar’s predecessor “Pompey the Great” took 6 fluorite vases from Mithridates’ treasure and installed them in the temple of Jupiter.

There are also descriptions in roman literature attesting to the “fact” that drinking alcoholic beverages from vessels carved of fluorite kept the drinker from getting drunk. Recently archaeologists have uncovered artifacts of carved fluorite found  in the ruins of Pompeii.

One of the oldest and most famous deposits of fluorite in the world is the Blue John Cavern in Derbyshire, England, which produces a purplish-blue fluorite known as Blue John. Since Roman times, and more than likely prior to that,  Blue John or Derbyshire spar has been used for making vases and other ornamental objects and jewelry.

The name is popularly said to come from the French; bleu-jaune, meaning ‘blue-yellow’, so named because of the characteristic yellow banding among the purplish-blue in this unique fluorite. It is a fact that some Blue John was indeed sent to France for gilding by the French Ormolu workers of the Louis XVI period. However, they were emulating the pioneering ormolu ornaments of Matthew Boulton of Birmingham who around 1765 called the stone ‘Blew John’.

Current Uses

There are three principal types of industrial use for fluorite, corresponding to different grades of purity.

Metallurgical grade fluorite, the lowest of the three grades, has traditionally been used as a flux to lower the melting point of raw materials in steel production to aid the removal of impurities, and later in the production of aluminum.

Ceramic (intermediate) grade fluorite is used in the manufacture of opalescent glass, enamels and cooking utensils. Fluorite also has ornamental and lapidary uses. Fluorite may be drilled into beads and used in jewelry, although due to its relative softness it is not widely used as a semiprecious stone.

The highest grade, acid grade fluorite, is used to make hydrofluoric acid by decomposing the fluorite with sulfuric acid. Hydrofluoric acid is the primary feedstock for the manufacture of virtually all organic and inorganic fluorine-containing compounds, including fluoropolymers and perfluorocarbons, and is also used to etch glass.

Fluorite is used instead of glass in some high performance telescopes and camera lens elements. Exposure tools for the semiconductor industry make use of fluorite optical elements for ultraviolet light at 157 nm wavelength. Fluorite has a uniquely high transparency at this wavelength.

Fluorite has a very low dispersion so lenses made from it exhibit less chromatic aberration than those made of ordinary glass. In telescopes it allows crisp images of astronomical objects even at high power.

Canon Inc. produces synthetic fluorite crystals that are used in their more expensive telephoto lenses. Nikon has previously manufactured at least one all-fluorite element camera lens (105 mm f/4.5 UV) for the production of ultraviolet images.

Fluorite objective lenses are manufactured by the larger microscope firms (Nikon, Olympus, Carl Zeiss and Leica) due to their strong hexagonal crystal structure most notable for evenly refracting light. Their transparency to ultraviolet light enables them to be used for fluorescence microscopy. The fluorite also serves to correct optical aberrations in these lenses.
